With its compact body, the Burmese is often surprisingly heavier than it looks. This beautiful breed is characterized by its silky coat, round head, and very big, expressive, and hypnotizing eyes.
Burmese cats will often start life as very lively kittens and will continue to be playful well into their adult years. They are very vocal, and though usually not as noisy as their Siamese cousins, Burmese do tend to do a lot of meowing. Their high intelligence combined with their adorable appearance and sometimes bossy demeanor also means that if you're not careful, you may soon find your Burmese running the house from atop the refrigerator or window ledge.
Burmese cats are good with children and very loyal to their owners. Like other breeds, they sometimes exhibit the dog-like behavior of following their owners around. However, unlike dogs, they may just jump into your laundry basket, sit on your keyboard, or climb into the kitchen cupboards. Burmese also love warm places, and enjoy sitting on your lap or getting into bed with you.
The earliest known instance of the breed comes from Thailand, but the first Burmese brought to the United States was Wong Mau in the 1930s.
