Clever, yet fiercely independent, the Cairn is a true Terrier. Curious and inquisitive, these little dogs learn quickly, love to spend time exploring with their owners and are always ready and willing to dig out a new hole.
Because of the Cairn’s propensity for digging, owners should make sure they keep their dog in a secure area with a fence that’s been planted at least a few feet under the ground. Despite the Cairn’s escape abilities, they make wonderful companions who always seem to be genuinely enthusiastic about whatever activity you have planned.
Historically, Cairn terriers were bred to work in harsh conditions and on rough terrain, so despite their size, their hardy and tough. Because of this though, they often attempt to steal the dominant dog position in a multi-animal household. So, be watchful if you’re planning on introducing a Cairn into a home that already has an established alpha dog.
Cairn Terriers are seasonal shedders. Typical grooming includes regular brushing and grooming. However, for show purposes, the dogs or hand stripped. For pets, hand-stripping can be done once a year or the dog can simply be trimmed with shears.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, cataracts, glaucoma, kidney problems, blood disorders, progressive retinal atrophy, Legg-Perthes and craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO). However, the Cairn Terrier Club is diligent and active when it comes to weeding out genetic problems. The problems listed are infrequent and rare.
