Though the Canaan can be extremely rambunctious as a youngster, these dogs mellow out with age, actually growing up to be fantastic apartment pets or companions for the less-active or the elderly.
Despite their loving disposition, the Canaan can be hesitant around visitors or strangers. Have patience and allow the dog to become used to a new person at their own pace. When it comes to kids and other animals, a Canaan usually sees them as just more members of the family pack.
When it comes to training, the Canaan adapts well to clearly defined rules. They are easily house trained and clearly understand boundaries (like no wet paws on the couch). However, because of their inquisitive nature, the Canaan does not do well at training tasks like obedience trials. They are easily distracted and would much rather sniff out a patch of grass than compete.
As a member of the herding group, the Canaan Dog is a natural protector. While they’re unlikely to attack a stranger, they will sound an alarm if they feel their territory is being impinged on.
Historically, the Canaan Dog is one of the oldest breeds in the world. Traditionally, the Canaan Dog was the herd dog and protector of the ancient Israelites, bred to guard their families and their flocks. Through centuries of desert living, the Canaan has evolved into a hardy and healthy breed.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy, though both are rare.
