The Cane Corso is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The Cane Corso Association of America (CCAA) is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Originally bred as a guard dog in Italy, the Cane Corso is large, lean and strong. Though their face looks like a Mastiff, they are much more athletic and energetic. Prospective owners should know this is a dog that needs exercise.

Because they were bred for guarding, the Cane Corso is not only confident, but also very protective of its family. They are easily trained and get along well with all family members, including children. When strangers or guests come to visit, always remember that your Cane Corso will initially be reserved and somewhat apprehensive. Have patience and give the dog time before he relaxes.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
