With their little legs, big bodies and even bigger personalities, Cardigan Welsh Corgis are fantastic family pets.

Because they were originally bred for herding purposes, don’t be surprised if your Cardi tries to herd you, the kids and any other family pets around the house. The Cardigan Welsh Corgi was bred to be tough enough to handle cattle, but also small enough to be agile and low enough to nip at the keels of misbehaving cattle and sheep. So, if your Cardigan puppy tries to nip your ankles, nip that behavior in the bud before it starts.

Though they love their families, Cardis aren’t overly dependent or clingy. They’re usually happy to play with a favorite toy or keep watch for squirrels in the backyard. When it comes to strangers and guests, Cardigan Welsh Corgis are typically reserved at first. With patience, they’ll eventually warm up to a new face.

For grooming, the Cardigan Welsh Corgi needs little more than weekly brushing until its annual shed. To reduce the amount of hair settling on every surface in your house during the Cardi’s shed; comb the dog several times a day with a wet comb.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, invertebral disc disease and hypothyroidism.

Historically, the Cardis are believed to have descended from the Teckel family of dogs and are among the oldest herders in the world. The name “cor gi” is said to loosely translate as “dwarf dog” in Welsh, where the breed has made its home for over 3000 years.
