The Catahoula Leopard Dog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The American Catahoula Association (ACA) is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Bred as a working dog, Catahoulas have remarkable temperaments. They’re intelligent, quick to learn, curious, obedient and energetic, but also loving, friendly to humans and great with children.

Because the Catahoula has a strong territorial and protective instinct, they can sometimes be aggressive towards strange dogs or seemingly unwelcome strangers. Combined with their enthusiasm and high energy levels, this can make the Catahoula a poor choice for urban or apartment living.

Ideally, a Catahoula would have a large, but confined space to protect, owners willing to invest in obedience training, a loving family and lots of fun exercise.

Traditionally, the Catahoula has been bred as a working dog and is used for hunting and ranching throughout North America. The breed has also found its way to Australia where they are used for hunting pigs.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for deafness, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
