The Caucasian Mountain Dog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The Caucasian Ovcharka (Mountain Dog) Club of America is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Large, strong and powerful, the Caucasian Ovcharka (Mountain Dog) can be a though dog for a new or inexperienced owner. Very much a pack animal, the Ovcharka will listen only to the family members it deems above itself or dominant. So, owners need to instill obedience and training along with love and trust.

The Ovcharkas have a history built on herding and sheep protection. Because of this background, the Caucasian Ovcharkas (Mountain Dogs) are very protective of their family. Taking that into account, owners should not allow strangers to run up to the dog or any play fighting amongst children. Though the Ovcharka makes a magnificently loyal guard dog, their protective instinct is quite powerful and could pose a danger if not kept in line by a dominant owner.

Historically, the breed is centuries old and developed in the Caucasus Mountains between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, though the dog is considered a Russian breed.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for obesity, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
