Overall, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is a great breed for active seniors. The dog has enough energy and spunk to enjoy a long walk or a game of fetch, but is also content to spend an afternoon napping on the couch.
As a spaniel, the King Charles still retains the pointing instinct and will often watch and point for birds, squirrels and other forest dwellers. If you’re a wildlife enthusiast, bringing a King Charles along on nature hikes can be a real joy.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniels also excel at obedience training. They’re easily housetrained, happy to please, willing to try new tricks and always ready for obedience sessions. They make great competitors for obedience, fly ball and agility.
Cavs tend to get along with all family members and fit in nicely within multi-animal households. They rarely wrestle for control of the pack, but it is important to make sure they get a healthy amount of attention. That said, breeders recommend Cavs for households with older, more respectful children. The dog does not hold up well with rough play or outdoor living.
When it comes to grooming, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very easy to care for, especially for a longhaired breed. Weekly brushing and combing are all that’s need to keep the coat tangle-free and shiny.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal problems, patellar luxation and mitral valve defect, a heart problem.
