The Central Asian Shepherd Dog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC). The Central Asian Shepherd Society of America (CASSA) is committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.
Despite its rarity in North America, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog is one of the world’s oldest breeds. Most likely, the dog originated in the region between the Ural mountain range, Turkey and China. Today, the dogs can still be found working in Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and other areas throughout the region.
Big, brawny and powerful, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog can be a lot to handle for a new or inexperienced owner. Though typically obedient and quick to train, the Central Asian Shepherd Dog is a dominant dog and so owners need to firm, fair and consistent with their training.
The Central Asian Shepherd Dogs have a history built on herding and herd protection. For centuries, they guarded the livestock, homes and families of nomadic tribes. Because of this background, the Central Asian Shepherd Dogs are very protective of their family members and territories. Though the Central Asian Shepherd Dog makes a magnificently loyal guard dog, their protective instinct is quite powerful and could pose a danger if not kept in line by a dominant owner.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, and cataracts.
