Adult Weight: 8-13 lbs.Breed: Chartreux
- Gray-blue color
- Gentle temperament
- Quiet
The antiquated and distinguished Chartreux breed is known for its gray-blue color and woolly double coat. Chartreux cats are normally medium-sized, but often boast a powerful and muscular build that is, perhaps, what led them to be considered excellent mouse hunters. Despite their prowess, Chartreux are also known for their characteristically smiling expressions and sweet demeanor.
Because the Chartreux has been bred for centuries, it is a very gentle and loving companion. They also have the rare distinction of being known as good travelers. Though very quiet, and sometimes mute, the Chartreux can be a very loyal friend, often exhibiting dog-like behaviors such as following their owner or preferred person, playing fetch, and sometimes responding to their given names.
The Chartreux will usually bond with one particular person in the house, but they're still very loving with other family members. Chartreux cats can also sometimes be couch potatoes, and tend to be fascinated by television.
Originating in France, the breed is very old. The first recorded instance of “the blue cats of France” appeared in the early 16th century. Though originally prized for their pelts and use as working cats, the cat eventually became a beloved domestic breed. By tradition, all kittens born in a particular year are given a name beginning with a designated letter of the alphabet, leaving out the letters K, Q, W, X, Y, and Z. The letter for 2008 is 'D.'
