The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is one of the greatest retrieving dogs in the world. With a hardiness that allows it to spend hours in the water, a perfectly camouflaged coat for work in wetlands and a drive for performance, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever was made for hunting and retrieval work.
Because of their strong water hunting background, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers or Chessies, as they’re sometimes called, absolutely love the water. Whether they’re retrieving sticks and toys or fallen ducks, Chessies are up for any water game and are likely to jump into any body of water they see, including large puddles. They also enjoy field hunting - their double coat makes them well-equipped to handle underbrush while tracking game birds.
When it comes to training for obedience and field trials, Chessies need a trainer and leader who can instill obedience while simultaneously gaining the dog’s respect and loyalty. Because they have a strong will, owners should assert dominance early on in order to build a relationship. Remember, retrievers work best for an owner that they not only love, but also look up to and admire.
For multi-family households, Chessies are usually fine if socialized from a young age. They tend to be a dominant breed and it’s not always a good idea to have two of the same sex.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for elbow dysplasia, hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts and osteochondritis dessicans, a growth disorder of the joints.
