It's surprising that the Chilean is a rare breed outside of South America. The horse is hardy, well built and practically a metaphor for the New World.
Known for its robust health, immunity to disease, endurance, and ability to recuperate from injury quickly - the Chilean is a survivor, through and through. Its thick double coat shields it from the cold Antarctic wind while simultaneously protecting it from the hot Chilean sun. Its hooves are hard and its muscular body is made for work.
The Chilean is loved by “Huasos,” Chilean cowboys, and has been bred to bring out particular qualities desirable in a rodeo horse – agility, confidence, intelligence, and tractability. The horse must be brave enough to stand its ground in the rodeo ring, but also docile and intelligent enough to understand your commands and trust your lead. Finally, the rodeo horse needs agility to change directions quickly and stay on top of a wayward bull. The Chilean has all these qualities.
It is the oldest registered native American breed and the oldest breed registered in South America. The bloodline began as far back as 1544 when horse breeding began in New Toledo. Once an enduring work horse, the breed began to be bred specifically for its speed - a quality that is now essential to its success.
After the spread of mechanization and the development of other horses better suited for draft work, the breed declined rapidly in numbers and even faced extinction. However, the growing popularity of Chilean Rodeo and the horse's predominance in the field saved the Chilean, making it a well loved and honored Huasos' companion.
