With their distinctive wrinkles, unique faces and blue tongues, Chinese Shar-Peis can attract a lot of attention. Strong, stable, behaved and dignified they also make wonderful companion and therapy dogs.
Despite their size, the Shar-Pei has great control over their energy levels. They can jump and play on command, but also sense when it’s time to relax and calm and down – making them a great choice for semi-active owners who want a dog with energy, but not too much. Shar-Peis love human contact and enjoy play as well as lots of attention from family members.
Historically, the Chinese Shar-Pei dog has its origins in the Guangdong province of China. The dog was initially bred as guard dog and fighting dog and was once trusted as the guard dog of the royal family.
As a natural guard dog, the Shar-Pei can be protective of its territory and family members. If you’re bringing a Shar-Pei into a multi-animal household, you should socialize them from a young age. Because they’re headstrong and somewhat dominant, owners need to assert themselves from the moment they bring a Shar-Pei puppy home. From there, a mutually rewarding relationship can be built on trust and respect.
When it comes to grooming, regular brushings and frequent ear cleanings are all that’s needed. Brushing with a wet brush will help to remove excess hair and reduce shedding.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for demodectic mange, entropion, hip dysplasia, malabsorption, bloat, amyloidosis, hypothyroidism and autoimmune diseases.
