Dignified and somewhat aloof, Chows often give off regal airs. Most breeders and Chow Chow enthusiasts describe the breed as somewhat “lordly” and often unwilling to fetch a ball or roll over.
They’re independent and strong-willed, but also extremely intelligent. Chows are also natural guard dogs and can be extremely protective of both their family and their territory. Most breeders recommend families should look for a puppy that’s playful and easygoing rather than standoffish. For people looking for a dog that’s independent, quiet and subdued, the Chow is a great choice.
While Chows don’t always make the best friend for a young boy or girl, they do get along with children if socialized from a young age. Multi-animal households should be aware that Chows are a dominant breed and will get along best with either a submissive breed or a Chow of the opposite gender. Typically, cats and other animals are ignored at best.
When it comes to grooming, Chow Chows with rough coats should be brushed daily while smooth-coated Chows Chows are wash and wear, though they should be fully blow-dried. Both varieties should be combed regularly during their seasonal shed. Using a wet comb or brush will help pull out shed while minimizing the amount of hair collecting on your furniture.
Chow Chows don’t do well in the hot summer months. Chows should have access to air conditioning or even a kiddy pool to help them cool down on humid, sunny days.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, renal cortical hypoplasia, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, entropion, hypothyroidism, stenotic nares, hip dysplasia and osteochondritis dessicans (OCD).
