Not as high-energy as other spaniels, the Clumber Spaniel is a great companion for someone looking for a friend to go for long walks or spend an afternoon hanging out on the porch. Overall, the Clumber Spaniel is a social dog with a sweet disposition.
Heavier than many spaniels, the Clumber is a plodder. They can hunt and track all day, but they’re more likely to work silently and steadily than with high energy bursts or consistent yapping. Loyal and dedicated, the Clumber is a great retriever and flusher who always seems to stay focused on the task at hand – making them a great choice for hunters.
Despite their charming traits, the Clumber Spaniel is a rare breed and prospective owners may have to wait for a healthy litter.
Historically, the origins of the breed are unknown prior to the middle of the 19th century. However, many suspect the breed originated in France, though it takes its name from Clumber Park.
When it comes to grooming, Clumber Spaniels require daily brushing. Owners should also regularly clean the dog’s ears and occasionally trim the hair on the bottom of their feet. Some owners also trim or clip the dog’s natural feathering.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, hip dysplasia, ectropion, entropion and vertebral disk problems.
