There are over 21 bird species that make up the Cacatuidae or Cockatoo family. Though Cockatoos have parrot qualities, like having four toes and a curved beak, they are distinguished by their striking head crests and often larger size.
Some of the more popular Cockatoo breeds include the Moluccan, the Goffin, the Bare-Eyed, and the Umbrella, an all-white bird with an incredibly large crest that can live up to 80 years. The Goffin is much smaller, sizing up at 10 to 11 inches, but it is also mostly white. The Moluccan stands out because of its salmon crest and impressive 20 inch size. The Bare-Eyed, sometimes called 'Little Corella,' is also white and possibly the most popular of the Cockatoos.
Cockatoos can be very playful and lively and because of this, require a lot of attention and stimulation. Not only should a variety of toys be provided, but they should also be rotated on a regular basis to ensure your Cockatoo doesn't become bored or despondent. Depression or neurotic behavior can also be linked to a lack of interaction with owners, out-of-the-cage time, or physical activity.
Cockatoos are very affectionate and are often described as touchy or cuddly. They like to spend time with you, whether it's snuggled in your arms, sleeping on your chest, or atop your shoulder. If attended to, a Cockatoo will bond very closely with its owner.
Intelligent and occasionally loud, Cockatoos can do speech mimicking, but, like all birds, this is not guaranteed.
Diet should always stress variety, with an emphasis on fruits, nuts, vegetables, seeds, and nutritional balance.
Native to Australia and surrounding countries, many wild Cockatoo species are considered endangered or vulnerable. It's illegal to export any animal out of Australia, but you'll find many breeders operating in North America and Europe.
