Cocker Spaniels are one of the top ten registered breeds in the American Kennel Club for decades. They have lovely and cheerful personalities, while also being playful, social and beautiful. Overall, the Cocker Spaniel gets along well with other animals, other dogs and children.
However, because the breed is so popular, prospective buyers should watch out for breeders who are breeding solely for profit and not for love of the breed. Look for breeders who are sincerely invested in maintaining the Cocker breed, including its lovely temperament and always ask to see the mother and/or father to assess their temperament and personality before purchasing a puppy.
Though the Cocker Spaniel is traditionally a hunting dog, today they are usually kept as family companions. They can be trained to hunt, flush and retrieve, but most families simply enjoy playing fetch with their Cocker, not hunting ducks.
Because of their sporting background and history, Cocker Spaniels do great at obedience trials and activities like fly ball or agility tests. If you’re interested in competing in flying disc or fly ball, a Cocker Spaniel can make a fantastic competitor.
When it comes to grooming, Cocker Spaniels should be brushed daily. Their long coats should be trimmed, bathed and blown dry every couple of months. To reduce odor, more regular bathing (once a month) is sometimes necessary as urine and feces can become trapped in the hair. Like with all long-haired breeds, you should keep your Cocker Spaniel away from areas with nettles and burrs as these will usually need to be cut out of the coat.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, hip dysplasia, autoimmune diseases, skin conditions and epilepsy.
