Just like the infamous Lassie, the Collie is sweet, loyal energetic and friendly. They get along with all family members, including rambunctious youngsters and are known for bonding exceptionally with their loved ones.
Naturally, a Collie is not for the family that expects to leave their dog alone outside. These social animals prefer to be in the heart of the action, socializing with their family and participating in all the fun.
Because the Collie is known for relishing every moment with their beloved owners, they make fantastic obedience dogs. They are eager to please, quick to learn and sincerely enjoy the time spent practicing and training.
Collies adapt well to almost any lifestyle, family makeup or residence and are often just as happy in an urban setting as they are on a farm. With regular exercise, lots of love and attention and regular petting, the Collie makes a wonderful best friend and truly affectionate companion.
Historically, the term Collie refers to various types of herding dogs originating in Great Britain. Though, when you say “Collie,” the image that typically comes to mind is that of the Rough Collie – made famous by Lassie, a popular television personality and possibly one of the world’s most famous dogs. The Smooth Collie is exactly the same as the Rough Collie, except for its coat, which is short and smooth to the body.
When it comes to grooming, Collies should be brushed weekly and bathed as needed.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for Collie eye anomaly (checked for by 6-8 weeks of age), progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, dermatomyositis, hypothyroidism and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA).
