For a light draft horse, the Comtois is stunning. The horse is easily recognizable by its trademark chestnut coloring that's accented by a flowing and luxuriously flaxen tail and mane. A breath of feathering graces the Comtois' short but strong legs as they lead up to an incredibly powerful and muscular hindquarters. The back is long and the neck is both straight and muscular. The head, like many European drafts, is large with small, perky ears and bright, intelligent eyes.

Known for a gentle and trusting disposition, the Comtois excels at light draft work and is a willing and loving partner. Second only to the Breton, the breed is very popular in France.

The Comtois Horse is still used today in forestry and vineyard work. Because a horse can maneuver through tight spaces and causes little disruption to the soil and environment, they are an excellent choice for sensitive agricultural areas such as a vineyard, especially those on more mountainous terrain.

The Comtois is a very old breed. It originated in Eastern France in the Jura Mountains between France and Switzerland and is believed to be related to the Ardennais.
