The term 'Conure' is one often used in bird breeding, but it is not a scientific designation. It refers to a loosely defined group of parrot-like birds. Often described as large Parakeets, Conures are distinguished by their long tails and small beaks. Though they come in a variety of colors, they are usually green and red.
Two of the more popular pet breeds are the Sun Conure and the Jeday Conure. The Sun Conure hails from South America and measures up at a distinguished 11 to 12 inches in length. They have green plumage with a striking red, yellow, and orange coloring on their backs, abdomen and head. These markings become more predominant as the bird gets older.
The Jeday is greener than the Sun Conure, and its color is usually limited to the head and abdomen. A third popular breed, the Sunday Conure, is created when the Jeday and Sun are bred together.
Both breeds, like all Conures, are known for their powerful voices. These birds are good talkers, but they can be very loud screechers, and are not recommended for those living in shared accommodation or close apartment quarters. If you like a quiet and calm environment, the Conure may not be for you.
That said, they are delightful creatures who are both loving and loyal. If shown lots of affection and attention, Conures will become very attached to their owners, and have been known to even defend or attempt to protect their owners from perceived attacks.
Conures need not only a large cage, but also a lot of time out of their cages. Before committing to a bird, you need to be able to commit to spending a few hours each day with your bird to ensure good mental health and a sense of stability.
Though quickly destroyed, chew toys are a favorite for Conures. Be careful not to get any toys that could choke or trap the bird. Also, be wary about plastic toys or anything with Teflon on it as these are not only indigestible, but can also be poisonous.
Native to Central and South America, Conures are a popular choice for bird lovers.
