The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The breed has been recognized by the FCI (Federation Cynologique International) since 1999 and was officially recognized as the national breed of the Czech Republic in 1982 (formerly Czechoslovakia). Breeders of the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

Historically, the breed was developed in the mid twentieth century by breeding a Carpathian Wolf with a German Shepherd. Breeders wanted to bring together the best elements of both breeds. So, in terms of build, strength, facial structure and coat, the Czechoslovakian Wolfdog resembles its wolf ancestors.

With proper training and an experienced owner, the Wolfdog will develop a strong bond with its master, one that’s built on respect and mutual trust. Though these dogs are strong and willing to serve, they can sometimes be stubborn. When training, opt for exercises that have a purpose or are task-oriented.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for progressive retinal atrophy, epilepsy, dermatomyositis, and hypothyroidism.
