The Dandie Dinmont Terrier has the unique distinction of being the only dog breed named after a fictional character – one from Walter Scott’s popular 1815 novel, Guy Mannering.
Strong-minded and certain, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a wonderful companion for those who want a confident dog that’s jovial and affectionate, but not overly dependent or fawning. With its little eccentricities and a coat that’s a bit quirky, the Dandie Dinmont Terrier is a dog whose personality fits its appearance. Overall, the Dandie is a persistent and determined little go-getter, particularly when it wants something.
Despite its “Dandie” name, the Dandie is a ruffian at heart and loves to get down and dirty. Because these dogs are natural diggers, originally bred to hunt vermin, prospective owners should have a well secured fence that’s anchored below ground.
For families with children and other animals, the Dandie should be socialized from a young age. These tenacious little terriers can be bossy and tend to take over if not properly reined from a young age. Remember, the Dandie may be small, but they’re tough little fighters, so early socialization, particularly with other animals, is important.
Because of their small size and hardy stature, the Dandie fits well into almost any domestic situation – from a rustic farm to a downtown studio apartment. With regular walks and grooming, these little scallions are happy anywhere.
For grooming requirements, regular brushing and combing will keep shedding at bay. Most groomers recommend hand-stripping as clipping can ruin the texture and color of the Dandie Dinmont Terrier’s coat.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for patellar luxation, elbow dysplasia, elbow deformity, glaucoma, invertebral disc disease and hypothyroidism.
