The Dartmoor is one of the world's most popular ponies for a reason – good looks and ability. The head of a Dartmoor is small and refined, giving it a regal appearance. The ears are small and perky, giving it a look of alertness complimented by its intelligent eyes. The Dartmoor normally shows in a bay, black, or dark brown coloring and always seems to exude elegance.

Because of its popularity as a child's riding and jumping pony, the Dartmoor Pony is bred extensively in the UK and Europe. But, despite its prominence with children, the Dartmoor is capable of carrying an adult, and is even raced in Belgium. The horse is also known for its skills as a jumper, and can be crossed successfully with an Arabian or Thoroughbred, a method often used to create good cross-country hunting or polo horses.

The Dartmoor's natural habitat is the wild moorlands in the southwest of England. The Pony's evolution has been influenced by a number of breeds, including the Welsh Mountain Pony, the Shetland, and the distinguished Arabian.
