The Doberman’s shiny, strong and sleek poise is regal and almost aristocratic. Seen as the most luxurious of protection dogs, the Doberman is bred and designed to keep all intruders at bay – whether they’re protecting a mansion or a farmhouse. Despite their toughness, Dobermans are known for being very affectionate with their loved ones and also willing to “take care” of kittens, toddlers, smaller dogs and even neighbors.

Because Dobermans are active, task-oriented dogs, they’re happiest when they have a job to do. They’re also intelligent, but somewhat stubborn and have a tendency to believe their way is the right way. Because of this, Doberman trainers need to be patient, strong and consistent. Proper training from an early age is important with a dog like the Doberman.

Dobermans do best when immersed in family life, but if you plan on keeping the dog outdoors, make sure he gets lots of human interaction, attention and adequate shelter. Remember, an isolated, protective dog can be a dangerous dog, so keep your loving Doberman well-socialized.

Dobermans require little effort in the way of grooming – they’re a true wash and wear breed. Regular brushings with a rubber curry or wet brush should keep any shedding to a minimum. Despite their strength and agility, Dobermans have a tendency to bulk up in their old age. Keep the poundage at bay by watching their diet and always sticking to a daily exercise program.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, liver disease, bloat, hypothyroidism, geriatric spinal demyelinization, cancers and Von Willebrand’s disease (a hemorrhagic disorder).

Historically, this breed originated in Germany, where they were first bred in 1890 by Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman. Pinscher is the German word for “terrier.”
