The Dogue de Bordeaux can be extremely intimidating. With its brawn, muscular build, tough face and powerful bark, the Dogue de Bordeaux is likely to scare anyone off. Luckily though, despite the breed’s strength and stature, they’re remarkably gentle – particularly with family members.

Proponents of the breed say the Dogue de Bordeaux is a truly regal protector – like a bodyguard in a tuxedo. Gentle with the smallest of children and accepting of other family dogs, the Dogue de Bordeaux is a rare, but wonderful breed.

Despite their bulk, Dogue de Bordeauxs are remarkably athletic and love to go for a run. Like other bulky urban dogs, they do fine with apartment living as long as they’re exercised regularly.

The Dogue de Bordeaux is also known for its love of cold and wet weather. These majestic dogs tend to overheat in the summer, so keep exercise to cooler times of the day and have air conditioning or a cool bath ready for heat wave season.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia and cancer

Historically, this breed originated in France, where its presence has been recorded since the early fourteenth century. The breed is very rare.
