The Dongola is a rare breed originating in Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea. Though the horse is taller than the Arabian, it is certainly related. The head is long, narrow, and refined like an Arabians, while the spirit and feisty nature make it a sure Arabian cousin.
The Dongola is normally black, but can often be seen in a reddish-bay and will sometimes display white points on the legs, face, and tail. The croup, the line between the tail and the highest point of the hindquarters, is distinctly sloped and evidence of the breed's crossing with the African Barb.
The registration and record of this breed is not readily available in America and outside of its native land, but it is known to have been introduced in areas like Ireland in order to create lighter, faster hunting horses and that the breed, while not flourishing, is not extinct.
