Like many high quality breeds, the form of the Dutch Warmblood Horse is exceptional. The hooves are excellent, open, and well-rounded. The legs are muscular with strong joints and well-formed hocks. The hindquarters are obviously powerful and lead to a long back and body that exhibits a deep and mighty girth. The withers, the 'shoulders' of a horse, are well defined and rise up to a shorter, but still graceful neck. Aesthetically, the Dutch Warmblood is usually bay or brown, and almost never shows feathering on the legs.

Despite being crossbred with racier breeds like the Thoroughbred, behavior problems are rare with the Dutch Warmblood Horse. This is a horse known for its consistently calm and even temperament – a trait invaluable in the world of competition.

As a competition horse, the Dutch Warmblood is known as an all-round athlete. They are good pacers, and confident jumpers. You will also see them in international-level carriage racing as well as dressage, a form of horse ballet that exhibits a horse's level of training and agility. Dressage is a sport that requires intelligence, grace, power, and an exceptional ability on the part of the horse to understand subtle commands and truly communicate with its rider.

By breeding the Gelderlander, a traditional Dutch carriage horse, and the heavier Groningen, Dutch breeders attempted to get the best out of both breeds. They wanted a powerful competitor that retained a staying disposition. The result was then refined by cross breeding with the Thoroughbred to improve the horse's speed, stamina, and confidence.

Today, the Dutch Warmblood hold its place as an international level competitor on a wide variety of playing fields.
