Rare for parrots, the Eclectus are known for their sexual dimorphism. This means that the sexes look very different from one another. Males are distinguished by their bright green feathers, candy corn colored upper beaks, and blue or sometimes red tail and wing feathers. Females have splashes of red on their crowns, blue and purple breasts, and black beaks.

The Eclectus, though loud, are known for being good talkers. Intelligent and easily trained, these delightful birds make excellent companions. Because the Eclectus is so social and smart, daily interaction and stimulation is extremely important and should last for at least two hours. To keep these perceptive and engaged creatures cooped up in a cage all day will surely have consequences on both their psychological and physical health.

When you first bring an Eclectus home, try to provide the same amount of attention that you plan on giving the bird six months into the future. It's important to create a balance, otherwise your Eclectus will expect a certain amount of out-of-cage time and physical interaction, and will often become despondent or depressed if these needs aren't met. Eclectus Parrots will often become self-mutilating if stressed or upset.

The Eclectus are usually compatible with other species, but, if you do introduce another bird, try to maintain private, one-on-one contact with each bird. Like most birds, Eclectus Parrots like large cages, and because they are so active, more space is better. Their diets should be varied and include a mix of soft and fresh foods alongside harder dried seed mix.

The Eclectus comes from the Indonesian Archipelago.
