A very old breed, the Mau is the only naturally spotted domestic cat. In fact, a Mau's spots are not only in its hair, but on its skin too. They are also characterized by their expressive, bright green eyes. Shorthair and medium-sized, the Egyptian Mau is known for its longer hind legs and consequently, its speed. The Mau has been recorded at 36mph.

Egyptian Maus are extremely loyal and devoted to their owners, though they can sometimes be shy or wary of strangers. Maus are not only protective of their families, but also their toys. It's not recommended to try and steal a favorite toy away from an Egyptian Mau as they will sometimes hiss, bite, or scratch.

Though the Mau is a very athletic breed and does require some activity, they are often happy to nap with their owner or enjoy stretching in a patch of sunlight. Egyptian Maus love warmth, and can often be quite sensitive to the cold. Consequently, you'll often find them snuggling up under the covers, atop your computer monitor, or on your lap.

Considered by many to be the oldest domestic breed, the Egyptian Mau is believed to have been domesticated by ancient Egyptians from a smaller African Wild Cat. Mau is the Egyptian word for cat.
