The English Boodle is not a purebred dog, nor is it a recognized breed. English Boodles are a hybrid or cross breed developed from the Poodle and the English Bulldog. However, the cross is recognized by the American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC).

Though the English Boodle cross can pull behavioral characteristics from both the Poodle and the Bulldog, the English Boodle is best known for its playful attitude and poodle-like coat. These high-energy pups are also independent with a splash of sass.

Like Bulldogs, Boodles are often great with families and kids, but they can get underfoot. The Boodle takes the term “companion” to heart and loves to follow you or the kids around the house while you do the dishes, finish homework or try to read the newspaper. Despite their tendency to nap, if you’re looking for a dog with a cat-like persona, the Boodle isn’t it.

Along with their devotion, the Boodle, with its Bulldog and Poodle ancestry, can be downright stubborn. If he doesn’t want to perform a trick or go for a walk, he simply won’t and there’s very little that you can do about it. Professional trainers suggest using positive reinforcement like food treats and to try training exercises that aren’t too repetitive.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for cataracts, heart disease, entropion, ectropion, elongated palate, heart defects, cherry eye, stenotic nares, small trachea, hypothyroidism, and inverted or recessed tails.
