Overall, English Cocker Spaniels are a hardy breed, both strong and durable. They’re deeply devoted to their owners and will always be there to greet you at the door with a friendly face and an exuberant tail wag.
English Cocker Spaniels are very social dogs, they enjoy being in the thick of family activity and don’t mind the pack environments that develop in multi-animal households. Typically, this jovial breed loves to play outside, particularly in snow and water.
Because of their breeding background as sporting dogs, the English Cocker does show a certain field instinct. These dogs are still capable of working and hunting alongside an enthusiastic hunter. They also perform well in hunt tests, agility training, tracking and obedience trials.
When it comes to training, most English Cockers need a firm and consistent trainer to teach them to share, get along well with others and perform. Once properly trained though, the English Cocker Spaniel is a great family member, wonderful with both kids and adults.
For grooming, most owners take their English Cockers in for regular trimmings. Regular brushing will keep shedding and fluff to a minimum, while regular ear cleanings should be a top priority.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy, kidney disease, cataracts and deafness
Historically, this breed originated in England, where Spaniels have been recorded for almost five centuries. The breed was officially established, and differentiated from the American Cocker Spaniel, in 1946 as the English Cocker Spaniel.
