The English Foxhound has been bred for centuries – designed for speed and, most importantly, endurance. Wonderful with horses, able to run for hours and equipped with a fantastic tracking nose, the English Foxhound is designed for fox hunting.
Prospective owners must be ready to give their dogs regular vigorous exercise and a confined outdoor space because when a Foxhound catches a scent, they’re off and they can be very hard to catch.
Because Foxhounds are traditionally raised in packs, they’re often social dogs able to live harmoniously with other dogs and family members, including rambunctious children. English Foxhounds are also known for having a long adolescence. Trainers should have patience and always approach training with a firm consistency. Like most dogs, Foxhounds respond best to positive reinforcement like food rewards.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, renal disease and pancreatis.
Historically, this breed was created in the late sixteenth century. During the rein of Henry VIII, deer fell out of fashion and the fox became the new prey for sport. The English foxhound was then developed by mixing blood from the Greyhound, the Fox Terrier and the Bulldog to create a dog that was fast, able to hunt and tenacious.
