The English Springer Spaniel is an extremely divided breed. Prospective owners should be aware of the vast differences between the show and field varieties of this breed. Ideally, a buyer will go to a breeder who focuses specifically on the type of Springer Spaniel (field or show) in which they’re interested.

The Field variety or lines of Springers are upland bird game dogs. Their job is to track birds, find them and then flush them out for the hunter to shoot. Because of their field requirements, they tend to have longer legs, a more athletic build and a lot less coat than their show cousins. While intended for the field, these Springers also make great companions for active families.

In contrast, the show Springer Spaniel tends to have a heavier and longer coat along with a deeper-barreled body, generally a more compact dog bred for looks rather than sport. Generally, the thicker coats require more brushing and trimming and the show varieties tend to be more subdued than field dogs. Their temperament might be easier to handle for a family that’s new to dogs or isn’t looking for an instinctive hunter.

For grooming, show Springers should be trimmed regularly around the ears, foot pads and genitalia area. Like with most Spaniels, the ears must be cleaned out regularly to prevent infection. Both clipping and cleaning can be done by the owner, though many owners use groomers.

In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, epilepsy, glaucoma, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal dysplasia, subaortic stenosis and vonWillebrand’s disease, a hemorrhagic disorder.

Historically, this breed originated in England and appeared as early as the seventeenth century. The Springer Spaniel has always been bred as a hunting dog.
