The English Toy Spaniel breed is divided into color varieties. The Prince Charles is a tricolor dog, the King Charles is black and tan, the Blenheim is white and the Ruby is pure red.
Typically, the Blenheim and Prince Charles breed varieties are more rambunctious and active than their Ruby and King Charles cousins. The Ruby, though playful, is somewhat more subdued and relaxed. Despite being a toy breed, the English Toy Spaniel usually enjoys playing in the yard, fetching a ball or chasing a stick. Because they were originally bred for hunting purposes, the dogs still retain some of these instincts and are still used for mice hunting.
Social and friendly, the English Toy Spaniel enjoys spending time with humans and other dogs. They get along well in pack situations and rarely, if ever start conflicts with other dogs. Typically, the English Toy Spaniel is a submissive breed, both to owners and other dogs. They need little more than love and attention to keep them happy.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, liver disease, bloat, hypothyroidism, geriatric spinal demyelinization, cancers and Von Willebrand’s disease (a hemorrhagic disorder).
Historically, this breed originated in Britain during the Renaissance. They were first created as a companion dog for court, though the breed was eventually mixed with Pug and Japanese Chin to give its trademark snout.
