The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. Breeders of the Entlebucher Mountain Dog and the National Entlebucher Mountain Dog Association (NEMDA) are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.
Sturdy and compact, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog also boasts a fantastic personality. Though somewhat rare, this breed is quickly growing in popularity thanks to its intelligence, charm, loyalty and sweet disposition.
Though independent, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog can be somewhat clingy and tends to attach itself to one, favored family member. If you’re the type of owner who won’t be home for long periods of time or doesn’t like a constant companion, the Entlebucher Mountain Dog may not be for you. That said, they are fantastically loyal dogs committed to their owners and always eager to please.
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is a great dog for active families. They’re rambunctious, get along well with children, exhibit a hardy personality and love all the business and attention that a full family provides.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, hemolytic anemia and Von Willebrand’s disease (a hemorrhagic disorder).
The Entlebucher Mountain Dog is the smallest of the four Swiss Mountain Dogs. These dogs were originally bred to protect and drive herds in the Alps.
