The Estrela Mountain Dog is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The breed is recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) and the FCI. Breeders of the Estrela Mountain Dog and the Estrela Mountain Dog Association of America (EMDAA) are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.
Originating in the Estrela Mountains of Portugal, the Estrela Mountain Dog was first bred as a guard dog for flocks. With its large, muscular build, noble face and powerful bark, the Estrela is likely to scare anyone off. Luckily though, despite the breed’s strength and stature, they’re remarkably gentle – particularly with family members.
Proponents of the breed say Estrela Mountain Dog is a truly regal protector. Gentle with the smallest of children and accepting of other family dogs, the Estrela Mountain Dog is a rare, but wonderful breed. Because of their history as herd protectors, the Estrela tends to be quite protective, particularly of children. Parents should watch carefully during any rambunctious play.
Despite their size, Estrela Mountain Dogs are remarkably athletic and love to go for a run. The dogs still work today as herd protectors in their native Portugal as well as police dogs.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia and cancer.
