Adult Weight: 7-9 lbs.Breed: European Burmese
- Shorthair
- A people cat, but not a lap cat
- Loyal, but independent
Though quite similar to the Burmese, the European Burmese is characterized by its wide array of colors. Where the Burmese usually comes in just four colors, the European Burmese can display a range of up to ten different colors. They're medium sized cats with strong, muscular bodies and large, expressive eyes that can be very hypnotizing.
As for temperament, the European Burmese can be quite lively, playful, and very vocal. They also bond well with their families, including children. They're known to shadow their owners and will often follow you around as you go about your household chores. Because the European Burmese is a social cat, they enjoy the company of other household pets and are often happier when there are two of them.
That said, they have a bit of a reputation for being a tad bossy, so watch out that your Great Dane isn't soon taking orders from your eight pound Burmese. It's been known to happen.
Both the Burmese and the European Burmese came from the same founder feline. His name was Wong Mau and he was brought to San Francisco from Thailand in the 1930s by Dr. Joseph Thompson. From this single cat, both breeds were born.
