To say the Field Spaniel is an “enthusiastic” breed would be a gross understatement. This is a dog that loves to romp in the great outdoors with their favorite person for hours on end. The Field Spaniel is all about long swims, rigorous hikes, high-energy jogs and epic games of fetch. Overall, this is a dog that requires an active owner.
Thanks to their natural hunting and flushing ability, athleticism and endurance, the Field Spaniel is a favored hunting companion in both Britain and North America. Intelligent and eager to please, the Field Spaniel is easy to train – once you get his attention.
Prospective owners need to be ready for an active dog. Exercise is a must, along with a laid-back attitude that’s ready to laugh at a dog covered in mud, rather than worry about the good furniture.
When it comes to multi-animal households, the Field Spaniel is pretty easy-going and tends to play well with others. They’re also known for being wonderful with children, being both gentle and active. Despite their friendly temperament, the Field Spaniel is still a relatively rare breed and prospective owners may have to wait for a puppy.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy and hypothyroidism.
Historically, the breed was the first Spaniel developed specifically for show and prized for its black coat. Once on the brink of extinction, devoted breeders have worked hard to bring the breed back.
