The Finnish Lapphund is an FSS (Foundation Stock Service) breed. That means it isn’t recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, but it will be soon. The breed is recognized by the Canadian Kennel Club (CKC), the FCI and the Australian National Kennel Council (ANKC). Breeders of the Finnish Lapphund and the Finnish Lapphund Club of America (FLCA) are committed to obtaining recognition of the breed as well as preserving and celebrating it.

The Finnish Lapphund is a clever, vigorous and athletic breed. Because of their intelligence, Finnish Lapphunds are extremely trainable. Despite their rare status and small numbers, Finnies (as they’re sometimes called) have won numerous standings, medals and moments of recognition in agility trials, obedience trials, herding and even pet therapy.

The Finnish Lapphund is gracious and pleasant, but also alert – making it the perfect watch dog. A good Finnie knows when to bark and when to greet a friendly visitor. Historically, the breed was used to herd reindeer in its native Finland, so the dog has some herding tendencies.

Finnish Lapphunds also make wonderful outdoor companions. Because they’re active and absolutely love water, cold and snow, they’re happy to accompany you on a long walk on a crisp February day or for a run on the beach on a cold March morning.

The breed settles in well with families, including young children. Finnish Lapphunds tend to have a tender and docile nature with children, the elderly and people with special needs.

Overall, the breed is healthy, but prospective owners should ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia and progressive retinal atrophy.
