As a retriever, the Flat-Coat is a hard-working, sweet and playful dog. But, because the dog is rarer than most breeds, prospective owners are less likely to run into the problems associated with more popular breeds. As a rare dog, breeders of the Flat-Coated Retriever tend to be sincerely invested in their dogs and the well-being of the breed as a whole.
Like most retrievers, Flat-Coats love the water. They’re happy to roll around in puddles or fetch a stick in the water for hours. As an active and intelligent dog that’s eager to please its owners, Flat-Coated Retrievers tend to do very well in obedience trials. They are highly trainable and do wonderfully when motivated with positive reinforcement.
When it comes to multi-animal households, the Flat-Coated Retriever Spaniel is pretty easy-going and tends to play well with others. They’re also known for being wonderful with children, being both gentle and playful.
The Flat-Coated Retriever is an active and athletic breed. Prospective owners should be ready and eager to give their dog lots of quality exercise. This breed makes a fantastic jogging companion, fetcher or swimming partner. But, unlike many sporting dogs, the Flat-Coated Retriever tends to be subdued and relaxed once indoors.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, cancer, entropion, progressive retinal atrophy, patellar luxation, cataracts and hypothyroidism.
The breed originated in England in the 19th century. It was officially recognized as an AKC breed in 1915.
