Average Size: 15 hh (60 in)Breed: Freiberger
As a true mountain-bred horse, the Freiberger is surefooted and well suited to rough and rocky terrain. The hindquarters are thick, muscular, and wide, while the second thighs are very well developed. The neck is short and well-curved, leading down to shoulders that are well suited to a harness or carriage.
The Freiberger's head is small, neat and somewhat pony-like, and, like ponies, they are known for their quiet and gentle disposition. The Freiberger has a staying personality, one that is trusting and willing. This feature, combined with their confidence in mountainous areas, make them perfect for navigating the region.
They are most often used in harness, or as an army pack horse for the Swiss army, but they are also a good fit for mountain farms, where stability and strength are much needed.
A mainstay breed at the Swiss Federal Stud, Avenches, the Freiberger Horse originated in the Jura region of western Switzerland. It has a Norman ancestory that can be traced back to one stallion, Valliant, who was foaled in 1891.
A true Freiberger Horse from Avenches is branded with the Swiss Cross.
