Friendly and hardy, the compact French Bulldog makes a wonderful companion for children, adults and seniors. Quiet, with a sweet temperament, the French Bulldog gets along with everyone in the family, including other animals. Though still lively and energetic, the French Bulldog can usually get enough exercise in the house or a small yard – making it an ideal choice for the apartment dweller or senior citizen.
With its trademark bat ears and always smiling face, the French Bulldog has an almost comical appearance. This playful dog is a bit of a clown too and loves to do to tricks for its favorite owner. But, it isn’t always a trainee. Playful and lovable, the French Bulldog often prefers to clown around rather than practice obedience drills.
Prospective buyers may find the French Bulldog is more expensive than other breeds. Because of difficulties during whelping, the French Bulldog is often an expensive dog to breed, thus causing the cost to be higher. However, most breed enthusiasts say they’re worth every penny.
In terms of health issues, veterinarians and breeders suggest that you ask about the dog’s risk for hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, spinal abnormalities, allergies, stenotic nares, cataracts, distichiasis, patellar luxation and an elongated soft palate. The French Bulldog does not do well in hot weather and should be kept in a cool environment.
Historically, the breed was thought to have developed in the mid 19th century, after Norman lace workers took smaller bulldogs with them to France. The dogs became popular in Northern France, eventually falling into fashion with the aristocracy.
