From the Galicia region of Mexico, the Galiceno retains many of its Spanish roots. The Galiceno Horse is a direct descendant of horses brought to Mexico from Hispaniola, now known as Haiti, in the sixteenth century.
Over the centuries, the horse has retained its swift, natural gait, one that was once prized in Europe. Despite its small size, the Galiceno is not a pony, but a horse in both its proportions and character.
Still used in Mexico as a riding horse, the Galiceno is known for having tractability and agility – two traits that make it well suited to training as well as ranch and rodeo work. The horse is responsive, quick, and intelligent, but also versatile. One could say the Galiceno is a horse of many hats.
The Galiceno's head is neat and well formed. The eyes are bright and the ears are perky and pointed. Known for having a tough constitution, the Galiceno is a tough and rugged breed able to withstand harsh climate and difficult conditions.
