The German Shorthaired Pointer excels in both water and field; making them one of the best all-purpose gun dogs. Overall, this is an active breed that is affectionate, responsive and gentle.
German Shorthaired Pointers are high energy, very intelligent and always willing to please their master. They’ll get along with cats and other dogs provided they are introduced and raised with them from a young age. These pointers are happy, friendly and also get along well with children. They strive for your affection and prefer to be indoors with their family, to whom they are very loyal and protective. Ideally, the German Shorthaired Pointer fits in well as a working dog or as a beloved pet with an active family.
They are easily trained, but can be willful - requiring consistent, firm and patient guidance. German Shorthaired Pointers don’t have a timid or flaky disposition, but can still become easily distracted. With their natural instinct to guard, it’s important to have obedience training; where they excel in alacrity, hunting and tracking. Brisk exercise is also important as they can become restless and destructive without it.
The German Shorthaired Pointer is very easy to groom. The coat has a harsh texture that is flat, thick and dense - making it water resistant. They have minimal shedding and require regular brushing with a stiff bristle brush. Their feet need to be dried thoroughly after exercise or play to keep them from getting chilled.
While German Shorthaired Pointers are generally healthy they can be prone to some problems such as skin cancer, ear infections and hip dysplasia, which may result in severe arthritis. This condition is hereditary but may be delayed or minimized by maintaining a healthy weight and age-appropriate exercise.
The breed originated in Germany in the 19th century, created by hunters that needed a dog that was capable of servicing them on foot. It appears that various crossings with German Bird Dogs, Spanish Pointers as well as German scent hounds were performed - eventually resulting in this magnificent utility dog.
