The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well-muscled, medium sized dog with a distinctive appearance. Typically Pointer in character and style, the German Wirehaired Pointer is intelligent, energetic and a determined hunter.

Around 1850, many improvements to both the shotgun and cartridge were completed. This resulted in more hunting being done which, of course, meant more hunters. Continental sportsmen, known for seeking the best in everything sought an all-purpose dog that could hunt in varied terrain, thus the German Wirehaired Pointer emerged.

This pointer is very affectionate and active, eager to learn and loyal to its family. They like to be occupied and enjoy working for their owner; as a result of this they are one of the best all-around gun dogs, able to hunt any type of game on any sort of terrain. The German Wirehaired Pointer is powerful and energetic and may become bored and hard to manage without enough exercise.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is friendly with those they know, but are naturally aloof with strangers and should be socialized at an early age. They do best with older, well-behaved children, are very affectionate with its master and can actually become jealous.

The functional wiry coat is the German Wirehaired Pointers most distinctive feature. The coat is weather resistant and, to some extent, water-repellant. The undercoat is dense enough in winter to help insulate against the cold. They should be brushed about twice a week with a firm bristle brush and bathe only when necessary.

The German Wirehaired Pointer is basically a pretty healthy breed. There are some instances of hip dysplasia and ear infections. To help maintain their health be sure that they get plenty of exercise.
