The Giant Schnauzer is robust, strongly built, active, sturdy and well muscled. Nearly square in proportion of body length to height, it is large and strong as well as lithe and elegant. On the whole, a Giant Schnauzer is a bold and valiant figure of a dog.
The Giant Schnauzers temperament combines spirit and alertness with intelligence and reliability. The Giant Schnauzer is always composed and watchful, easily trained, courageous, deeply loyal to family and playful. Amiable in repose and a commanding figure when aroused. Its sound reliable temperament, rugged build and dense coat make for one of the most useful, powerful and enduring working breeds.
Giant Schnauzers must have a great deal of both physical and mental exercise. They need to be given opportunities to vent their energy and stimulate their busy minds. Otherwise they may become more rambunctious and bored, which they tend to express by barking and destructive chewing. Most are watchful with strangers, reliable at determining friend or foe and very serious about protecting their home.
One of the most distinctive features of Giant Schnauzers is a combination of keen expression framed by beard and eyebrows. No other AKC recognized working breeds have a coat quite like the Giant Schnauzers. The wiry, slightly oily coat serves as protection against rain or underbrush. In fact, you want to keep the coat coarse and stiff, a profuse and soft coat is far more likely to need extra grooming to keep the softer hair from tangling and matting.
When it comes to the health of Giant Schnauzers skin irritations from improper grooming can occur. They are also susceptible to ear infections, thyroid problems as well as hip dysplasia.
Giant Schnauzers, originally bred in Germany as cattle dogs, were introduced into the United States during the 1930’s. However, due to the rising popularity of German Shepherds, the Giant Schnauzer did not become popular until the 1960’s. The public began becoming more aware of the breed when the Giant Schnauzer Club was formed in 1962 and the interest has not waned.
