The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a big dog on short legs and with their bone structure being one of the heaviest it gives the impression of great substance for its size. Their forelegs are bowed and are useful for digging, throwing dirt to the sides rather than between their legs like most Terriers. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is quite fearless and appears to be immune to pain when working.

Often referred to as imperturbable, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is hardy and resilient with a normally unflappable temperament. They very rarely bark which is a result of their original use, hunting vermin, where they were bred to remain silent when working. However, if they feel that someone, or something, is threatening their quarters they will voice their displeasure by deep guttural barks that belie their small size.

Like most terriers, the Glen of Imaal Terrier can be stubborn and have an independent streak. They are relatively easy to train and will respond enthusiastically to praise and dramatically to a scolding. In spite of their tenacity and courage when needed, the Glen of Imaal Terrier is devoted to their family.

The grooming of a Glen of Imaal Terrier is minimal and surprisingly easy. They have a double coat, harsh outer coat and a soft under coat that is easily cared for with a good brushing once a week or so.

In terms of health the Glen of Imaal Terrier is prone to hip dysplasia, PRA (progressive retinal atrophy) and skin problems that result from an allergy to fleas. They love to eat and have a propensity to become overweight so go easy on treats and give them exercise.

The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a centuries old breed taking its name from Glen of Imaal in County Wicklow, Ireland. They served as all around farm dogs used to guard livestock, hunt fox and badgers as well as the elimination of vermin.
