A Goldendoodle is a Golden Retriever and Poodle cross and has been bred in North America and Australia since the mid 1990’s. Golden Retriever breeders felt that since the smaller poodle hybrids had been successful they decided to breed for a larger family pet. They decided to breed a Standard Poodle with the Golden Retriever and the Goldendoodle was born. Their physical appearance runs anywhere from a shaggy-looking retriever to a curl-relaxed poodle or somewhere in the middle. They have been steadily increasing in popularity as a great hybrid.

Goldendoodles are a first generation cross and as such they exhibit hybrid vigour. This means that a cross between two unrelated purebred lines is healthier and grows better than either parent line. In the Goldendoodles case the cross between these particular parent breeds results in intelligent, affectionate, easy to train and wonderful family dogs.

The Goldendoodle is a very social dog that is happiest when they are with people. If they are left alone for long periods, they are likely to get into mischief and develop behavior problems. This medium sized family dog is eager to please and has an easy disposition.

As a hybrid cross, the Goldendoodles will inherit fur that looks a bit like both parent breeds. If the fur is left unclipped it is about 4-7 inches long and combing is necessary every few weeks.

As a hybrid cross, some breeders suggest they grow healthier and live longer than either parent line. The only genetic diseases that they can be prone to would have to be something that both Poodles and Golden Retrievers had in common. The two concerns are hip dysplasia and PRA (progressive retinal atrophy).

As a cross breed that has only been around for a few years, naturally the only real history available would be from the parent lines. Also being a hybrid there is no industry standard, because they cannot be registered in an organization such as the AKC. The breeders are hoping that Goldendoodles will continue to gain popularity and eventually there will be history on the Goldendoodles themselves and not just the parent lines.
