The Golden Retriever is an extremely well put together, proportional, active, never clumsy and powerful dog. Originally bred for hunting companions and retrieving water fowl, their love of water and retrieving make them an excellent choice for a search and rescue dog.
Golden Retrievers have excellent dispositions and are wonderful with kids; this loyalty and affection to their owners have made them one of the world’s favorite dogs. Many times they are used as therapy dogs in hospitals, as well as Seeing Eye dogs for the blind.
The Golden Retriever’s eyes have a deep and gentle expression with a spark of intelligence to go with them. They are quick to learn as is evident by the fact Golden Retriever’s were the first three dogs to obtain the Obedience Trial Championships a tremendous feat. A Golden is so family oriented that if you fail to include them in an activity they actually tend to sulk.
Grooming your Golden Retriever seems to be a never-ending process. It should be done at least twice a week and it normally takes a half hour or so to complete. If your dog manages to get burrs or other problems after being outside, you should take the time right then to get them out. The longer you wait the more matted it may become. To prevent further matting try to brush your Golden Retriever at least once a day so that the tangles do not get worse. If you are not sure how to do this, there are professionals that can do this for you.
Skin allergy tends to be the most common medical issues in Golden Retrievers, speak with your vet to see what type of precautions can be done to help prevent these. Golden Retrievers also appear to be prone to epilepsy, or seizures, again talk with your vet as there may be something that can be given to the dog to help avoid further seizures.
In both England and Scotland during the early 1800’s game was plentiful and hunting was both a sport and a practical way of obtaining food. Retrievers came into prominence as the desire for a medium sized dog that would do well in wild fowling.
