The Gordon Setter differs from both the Irish and English setter in that it has a more powerful structure, larger head as well as the color of their silky coats. It may be straight or slightly wavy, with profuse feathering on the legs, ears and tail. Their tail feathering creates a triangular silhouette with the hair growing shorter as the tail tapers.

A Gordon Setter is distinguished for both its obedience and loyalty. They are considered devoted, gentle and discerning and make great companions that love children. The Gordon Setter is very loyal to the family but tends to be reserved with strangers. They require lots of exercise or they may get hyperactive.

The Gordon Setters are very alert, confident and interested in everything. They have also been called capable, intelligent along with fearless and willing. They train rather easily, being strong-minded enough to stand all the rigors of training.

Regular combing and brushing of the soft, flat medium-length coat is basically all that is required to keep it in excellent condition. It is important to check for burrs and tangles along with a little extra care when it is shedding. Breeders say it is important to trim the hair on the bottom of the Gordon Setters feet and to keep the nails clipped.

A Gordon Setter is usually in excellent health but some things to watch for are hip dysplasia and eye disease. They are also prone to bloat and should be fed two or three small meals a day rather than one big one.

The Gordon Setter came from Scotland and the linage traces back to the early 17th century. They were originally described as easy to break, slow dogs who exhibit good endurance abilities. Noted for their beauty and bird sense the Gordon Setter was brought to the United States in 1842.
